Tomato Upma: A Semolina Dish with Tomato

The Upma as I’ve mentioned earlier has many variations. One of them is the Tomato Upma. Just to break the monotony of the regular Semolina Upma, I added one large tomato to it. It enhances the flavor and also the color of the dish. And what more, it’s healthy too.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup roasted semolina
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp urad dal
  • ½ tsp chana dal
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 green chili (optional)
  • 1 large tomato
  • Salt
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 pinch sugar

Method:

  • In a pan, heat some oil and add the mustard seeds
  • Once it splutters, add urad dal, chana dal, green chili and grated ginger and stir
  • Add 3 cups of water and add salt
  • Add the chopped tomato and once the water boils, add the roasted semolina slowly, stirring constantly
  • Keep stirring till the semolina absorbs the water and is cooked
  • Add a pinch of sugar
  • In the end add the ghee and stir
  • Serve hot with chutney
