While searching for Churchill you are very likely to miss the place because it is tucked away inconspicuously on the crowded Colaba Causeway. Its awning almost conceals the name on the board above and you have to strain your neck to read it. Another landmark would be a few steps beyond Café Leopold (made famous by Gregory David Roberts’ ‘Shantaram’)
We entered to find that the place could seat no more than 15-20 people at a time (and so the warning fell in place). Not that it was a deterrent to the awesome food we had heard about.
We took one of the 6 tables and browsed through the menu. The fare was mainly Italian. We ordered for a Bruschetta (Thick circular slices of bread topped with cheese and herbs) for starters. There is a chart pasted on the kichen door with the chef’s recommendations and we ordered for Malfati from the list. It was a baked dish of broccoli, mushrooms, spinach with loads of cheese. Though it wasn’t breakfast time we ordered for the much recommended egg-o-mania which was delicious. My friend who is a non-vegetarian asked for Chicken Valdostana and lasagna.
All dishes were extremely good and definitely value for money with an average of Rs 175 per dish. The waiter seemed a bit stressed as he seemed to be the only one around apart from the person at the counter. For Desserts we had an Irish Baily cake which was out of the world too.
Carry enough cash as they don’t accept credit cards. We had not but luckily there’s an ICICI ATM diagonally opposite to the left. When we left which was around 8.30 pm, there was a huge waiting outside.
